Microsoft, Sun Microsystems reach deal to boost MSN

Looking to boost its shrinking share of the online search market, Microsoft Corp. said that beginning Monday, its MSN tool bar would be bundled with Sun Microsystems' ubiquitous Java software in the U.S.

For Microsoft, the deal is a symbolic coup, because it partly replaces a high-profile agreement Sun struck with Google in 2005 to bundle the Google tool bar with Java.

Despite a number of initiatives, including offering cash back to users who use its Live Search to buy products, Microsoft has seen its share of the search market continue to fall, while Google's has continued to rise.

The Java deal -- which applies only to Internet Explorer users -- should provide a boost because Java is installed on millions of computers, in part to view Web sites. Internet Explorer users who download Java for the first time or who update existing versions of the software will be given the option to also get the MSN tool bar, which includes a field for Live Search.

Users who choose to download the tool bar also will be asked whether they want to switch their default search engine to Live Search.

Brad Goldberg, general manager of Microsoft's Search Business Group, said the deal with Sun was part of the company's strategy to increase the distribution of Live Search.

He noted that Microsoft had also reached a deal with Hewlett-Packard to put a Microsoft tool bar on all of its new computers. That deal goes into effect in January. Under another agreement, a Microsoft tool bar is also preloaded on new Lenovo computers.

Goldberg declined to say how much traffic Microsoft expected to generate from the arrangement with Sun.

But he said that across the market, about 35 percent of search queries come from entry points such as a tool bar, the address bar or a search bar within a browser.

Eric Klein, the vice president for Java marketing at Sun, declined to say how many users had downloaded the Google tool bar through Java.

Referring to the bundling, he said, "it's clear it's working," judging by the interest of companies such as Microsoft.

Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft in Redmond, described the arrangement as "another small step" in Microsoft's quest for share.

However, he said, "getting search in front of you isn't enough."

Financial terms, as well as the duration of the partnership, were not disclosed.

Sun provided few details about why its relationship with Google had ended in the United States (the Google tool bar will continue to be bundled with Java abroad).

Klein said Sun had "made a change in direction."

A separate agreement -- under which Sun put the Google tool bar within its StarOffice suite -- also expired on Monday, although the two companies continue to have other business relationships.

The Google tool bar in Star Office will not be replaced by Microsoft's offering.

The agreement between Sun and Microsoft shows once again how far the two companies' relationship has evolved.

In 1997, Sun sued Microsoft, alleging that the company had misused its Java technology. In 2001, Microsoft settled the case for $20 million. A year later, Sun filed a private antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, again over Java.

That case was settled for roughly $1.95 billion in 2004, when Sun and Microsoft entered a broad cooperation agreement, which was expanded three years later.

"The nature of the basic relationship between Sun and Microsoft has changed significantly over the past couple of years," Sun's Klein said.

"This is another rendition of that."

Safari Sits Stable in Oct, IE Slips Down

Apple's Safari take of the Web browser market remained relatively stable in October, grabbing 6.65 percent, up only slightly from September's 6.37 percent. Microsoft's Internet Explorer, however, continued on its slow downward trend giving up share to Firefox, according to data from Market Share.

 The Windows-only Internet Explorer went into October with 71.52 percent of the browser market, but slid down to 71.27 percent as it moved into November. Microsoft's browser has been steadily losing market share for months on end as users move to Firefox, Safari, and now to a small degree Google's Windows-only Chrome browser.

Firefox almost topped 20 percent of the browser market for the first time in October, ending the month with 19.97 percent. In comparison, Firefox ended August with a 19.75 percent market share, but dipped slightly in September to 19.46 percent.

Safari and Firefox have been on an upward swing for months as interest in both browsers continues to grow. Internet Explorer, however, has been losing market share to both for well over a year, which is likley an indication that many Windows users are hunting for alternatives to Microsoft's market dominating Web browser.

 While the statistics are handy for getting snapshot overviews of a particular Web browser's popularity, looking at the numbers over time offers a better impression of overall popularity. In this case, the numbers seem to indicate a growing interest in Safari and Firefox at the expense of Internet Explorer.

Google celebrates eight years of toolbar with new IE version

If you've used a computer in the last decade, no doubt you've come face to face with the Google Toolbar. Microsoft issues mega-patch to crush 20 bugs in Windows, Office, IE

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday patched 20 vulnerabilities, more than half of them rated critical, in 11 separate security updates for Windows, Office, Internet Explorer (IE), Active Directory and the Host Integration Server.

Also for the first time, the company predicted the likelihood that hackers would come up with exploits for each bug.
"The count's big," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security Inc. Eleven of the 20 flaws were rated "critical," the top ranking in Microsoft's four-level threat scoring system, while eight were pegged as "important," the next step down, and one was listed as only "moderate." Today's update was the largest since August, when Microsoft issued 26 patches in 12 bulletins.
Storms identified two general themes in the latest round of patches. "First, there's still a pervasiveness of client application updates that doesn't seem to be diminishing at all, and second, Microsoft's newer software is still less vulnerable than its older."
On the first point, Storms ticked off updates that addressed three critical vulnerabilities in Excel and six critical bugs in IE, while for the second he listed several security bulletins that tagged Windows 2000 or older editions of Office as vulnerable, but gave newer versions of its operating system or applications either a pass or lowered the threat for users.
"Today's patches really continue to hammer the idea that the newer [Microsoft] software is more secure," said Storms. "If there was ever a reason to update to newer software, this is it. There's no reason not to update, for example, to IE7."
Storms highlighted two other updates that he thought should receive special attention, particularly by enterprise IT professionals. One, spelled out in MS08-060, affects Active Directory, while the other, MS08-059, affects Host Integration Server (HIS), a little-known corporate product that connects Windows-based networks to IBM mainframe and AS/400 systems. Microsoft marked both bulletins as critical.
"The attack surface is low for MS08-059, but the potential impact is high because HIS interacts with the critical back-office infrastructure that can't be down," said Storms. Today's patch was the first ever for HIS, a fact that didn't escape Storms. "Now there's an update that will affect administrators who probably wanted nothing to do with Microsoft," he said.
"And there will be a lot of discussion about the Active Directory vulnerability as well as the SMB bug, mainly because these are remote exploits," Storms said. "They're in the classic style, where just some data packets can compromise systems. For that reason, I think they will garner a fair amount of respect, and researchers will probably exploit that."
Microsoft also used today's updates to launch its "Exploitability Index," a new effort announced in August. The index, which can be found in October's summary, lists each vulnerability along with the company's exploit rating. Microsoft settled on a three-step system that, in descending order of severity, predicts that researchers or hackers will come up with a consistently working exploit, develop an exploit that works only some of the time, or fail to craft attack code at all.

Required toolbar 'phones home' some user search data back to Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. today on 1 Oct 2008 launched a rewards program to entice consumers to its Live Search site, but it requires Internet Explorer and bars users of rival browsers, including Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome.
A toolbar required for participation also collects some search behavior data, including the number of searches on rival engines, and transmits the information to Microsoft daily.
One search expert questioned the restriction to IE, as well as Microsoft's decision to gather a wide-ranging amount of data from users, though he wouldn't go so far as to describe the company's newest attempt to get users to try its search site as "desperate."
"Why take this approach?" asked Danny Sullivan, editor in chief of the Search Engine Land Web site. "I think that Microsoft would do better if they pretended they didn't own IE. But paying people to try [Live Search] doesn't mean that they're desperate. I think it's an interesting way to get people to break the Google habit."
Google, in fact, paid site owners pennies per search as far back as 1999, Sullivan said, "and no one called Google desperate then."
Dubbed SearchPerks, the program awards users up to 25 "tickets" a day for each completed search at Microsoft's Live Search. Then tickets can be redeemed for prizes after the program ends next April. Among the rewards Microsoft touted on the SeachPerks site: free music downloads, clothing and frequent flyer miles on American Airlines, Delta and US Airways.
The program, which is available to U.S. residents 13 and older who have a Windows Live ID, also requires users to download and install a small toolbar, called Perk Counter, that keeps track of the number of Live Search searches and thus the number of reward tickets.
Perk Counter will install only in Internet Explorer, Microsoft's browser. Competitors -- including Mozilla's Firefox, Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome and Opera Software's Opera -- cannot be used with the SearchPerks rewards program. Attempts to visit the program's Web site with any of those browsers, in fact, are greeted with the message: "To earn value for your searches and join the SearchPerks! promotion you must have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher to participate."
According to Microsoft, the Perk Counter tallies more than the number of Live Search searches. In the terms and conditions for the program, as well as in a separate FAQ, Microsoft spelled out what the counter records and sends to its servers daily.
"The software records and sends to Microsoft the number of Web searches you do each day on different search engines; the types of searches you complete, such as for news or images; and the number of online ads you click on," states the SearchPerks' terms and conditions।

Prevent Explorer from Freezing with Large Zip Files on Vista

Windows Vista has built-in handling for zip files - you can create, extract, or even browse right down into them as if they were a folder. But if you have very big zip files sitting on your hard drive, bad things can happen unless you disable the zip handler.
Today, Me and friend were trying to restore one of my files from a previous backup. We grabbed the enormous zip file off my network drive and saved it onto the desktop. From there, a little bit of WinZip magic grabbed me the one, 35 MB directory I really wanted out of the whole 11 GB zip file.
When I finally got back to my host desktop later that evening, I found to my utter shock that things weren't working properly. For example, I opened up the file explorer and tried to expand a folder in the tree pane on the left-hand side. Instead of nicely expanding, showing the sub-folders, it just started spinning its wheels. When I came back to it ten minutes later, it was still chugging away.
I killed the explorer.exe process, restarted explorer and went on with my workflow. At least, until WinZip started having issues. I hit the "Extract" button on a reasonable sized archive (150 MB) and the app froze. Just like explorer, it was eating my full cpu and doing absolutely nothing with it.
Recognizing I was out of my league, I fired up a conversation with "The Geek" and we started troubleshooting. An hour and a half later, after pouring through mountains of log files, downloading tools I didn't even know existed, and wading through pages of output from SysInternals "procmon", we finally found the problem.
It seems that Windows Vista file explorer (by default) attempts to recurse into any zip archives in a direct subdirectory, allowing users to view the contents of the zip file directly in the sidebar. Windows XP had the same "feature", but it waited to enter the zip file until you actually expanded the node in the sidebar. In principle, Vista's method is a good idea. XP always suffered from long delays whenever you expanded a zip file, particularly over a network connection. Grabbing a file list in the background seems like a good idea, until you take into account extremely large archives.
By trying to recurse into that 11 GB zip file sitting on my desktop, Vista pretty much started a processor-intensive task that it had no chance of completing in a reasonable timeframe. Thus, killing performance across the board with no tangible return.
Disabling Zip Handling
The obvious solution to this problem is to just turn off Windows's built-in zip file handling, since I'm using WinZip anyway. The quickest way to do this is to use the excellent ShellExView application to disable the explorer shell extension. (you don't have to install it, just in case you're leery about that sort of thing)
Open up ShellEx in Administrator mode by right-clicking the file and choosing "Run as Administrator". Select all of the "Compressed" items, right-click and select "Disable Selected Items".
Now that the extension is taken care of, you can either logout, or you can be a bit smarter about things and just restart the "explorer.exe" process. To do this, open up Task Manager (right-click on the task bar and select "Task Manager", or use that good ol' three fingered Vulcan nerve pinch, Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and find the "explorer.exe" process. There probably will be more than one process in the list named "explorer.exe", so be sure to sort by CPU and select the one farthest toward the top.
Once you've selected the explorer, click the "End Process" and confirm in the ensuing dialog. The taskbar will disappear, along with all of your file explorer windows.
Now select "New Task (Run…)" from the File menu. In the "Open:" text box, enter "explorer" and hit OK. After a moment, the taskbar should reappear and everything should be hunky-dory. After this, you shouldn't have any more problems with large zip files locking up the system.

Maximize Your IE7 Tab Bar Space by Removing the Command Bar

One of the many annoyances I have with Internet Explorer is the fairly small default width of the tab bar… as somebody who opens a lot of tabs all the time, it becomes difficult to manage. With a simple tweak, we can remove the command bar that usually sits on the right of the tabs.

We can remove those buttons, giving us more space.

Add or Remove Buttons

Instead of removing the entire bar, you can simply add or remove the buttons from the bar by right-clicking on it, choosing Customize Command Bar and then Add or Remove Commands.

From here you can limit the buttons to only the ones you want… do you ever really use the Help button?

Or you can just make the toolbar's width small enough that it only shows a single button, with the others still being accessible through clicking on the chevron (make sure to un-check the "Lock the Toolbars" option)

Manual Registry Hack

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\CommandBar

  Find the key named "Enabled" in the right-hand side, and set the value to 0. You'll have to restart IE for the change to take place. Obviously you would set it back to 1 to put the command bar back in place.

Disable the Command Bar the Easy Way

Instead of messing with the registry, you can simply download the IntelliAdmin IE 7 Tweak Utility, which will perform the registry edits for you, and also let you hide the search bar, or force the menu bar to the top, both topics we've covered the registry hack method for in the past.

You can really minimize the amount of browser UI space by removing both the search and command bars.

You can always use the Alt key to temporarily show the menu, or get to things via keyboard shortcuts.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2: Can It Outfox Firefox?

Microsoft's updated browser, Internet Explorer 8, promises an assortment of new features, with the goals of making Web browsing with IE safer, easier, and more compatible with Net standards. We looked at Beta 2. On the surface, IE 8 seems to be a lot like IE 7, but Microsoft has made a good number of changes. However, you may have seen some of the new features in its no-longer-upstart competitor, Mozilla Firefox 3.
Tabbed Browsing
If you accidentally close a browser window in IE 8, you can opt to restore it when you reopen the program (just as you can in Firefox). But IE 8 will group related tabs together using color coding. If you open a link from efix in a new tab, for example, it will open adjacent to the original tab, and the tabs themselves will have a matching color. You can move tabs from one group to another, but if you have three unrelated pages open, you cannot create a group out of them.
Perhaps the most novel addition in IE 8 is what Microsoft refers to as tab isolation. The feature is designed to prevent a buggy Web site from causing the entire program to crash. Instead, only the tab displaying the problematic page will close, allowing you to continue browsing.
Of course, IE 8 Beta 2 retains some of the features introduced in the first beta, including WebSlices and accelerators; see "Updated Web Browsers: Which One Works Best?" for more details.
Improved Security
If you enable IE 8's InPrivate feature, the browser will not save any sensitive data--passwords, log-in info, history, and so forth. It would be as if your browsing session had never happened. This feature is very similar to Private Browsing in Apple's Safari browser, except that an icon in IE's address bar makes InPrivate's active status more obvious.
The browser's phishing filter--called SmartScreen--improves upon its predecessor's filter with such features as more thorough scrutiny of a Web page's address (to protect you from sites named something like paypal.iamascammer.com) and a full-window warning when you stumble upon a suspected phishing site. SmartScreen relies largely on a database of known phishing sites, so a new, unknown phishing site may be able to slip through the cracks.
IE 8 displays sites' domains in a darker text color, so you can more easily see whether you're actually visiting an ebay.com page, say, or in reality a page on some site you've never heard of. Microsoft could still put a little more emphasis on the domain name (using a different color background, for example), but the highlighting is a welcome addition.
Web Compatibility
Creating a site that looks identical in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari can be a challenge. IE 8 Beta 2 offers better support for W3 Web standards--a set of guidelines developed to ensure that a Web page appears the same in all browsers. The downside is that IE 8 will break some pages designed for earlier Internet Explorer versions.
To counteract this, Microsoft has added a compatibility mode: Click a button in the toolbar, and IE 8 will display a page the same way that IE 7 does. In my testing, I found that most pages worked fine with the standard (new) mode, and that most errors were minor cosmetic ones. Unfortunately, the Compatibility Mode toggle button may not be obvious to most users, because it's pretty small; a text label would have helped.
While it likely won't convince many Firefox users to jump ship, Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 may be worth considering for people who have not yet solidified their browser loyalties.

Microsoft is planning a "privacy mode" for the next release of its Internet Explorer (IE) web browser.
By clicking a button, users of IE8 will be able to limit how much information is recorded about where they go online and what they do.
Microsoft watchers have spotted two patent applications covering ways to manage the amount of information a browser logs.
When introduced the privacy mode will match features found on other browsers.

Australian blogger Long Zheng has found two patent applications made by Microsoft on 30 July for ideas it calls "Cleartracks" and "Inprivate".

Why you'd want to disable tabbed browsing is a mystery to me, but I received a request for a registry hack to force IE7 to not use tabs. I can only assume that it has to do with keeping users from too much confusion when upgrading from IE6.
There's two ways that you can disable tabbed browsing. The easiest way is to just follow these steps:
• Click the Tools button, and choose Internet Options
• Click the Settings button in the Tabs section:
Uncheck Tabbed Browsing as shown here:

This method is probably the simplest, and should usually be used.
If you are a system administrator, here are some registry hacks to Enable/Disable Tabbed Browsing. Just unzip, and double-click. Note that the disable registry hack will force the setting on the users, so they can't enable it without the enable registry hack.

Blocking Spam from International Senders in Windows Vista Mail

I personally use the Windows Mail client that comes with Windows Vista, but while I was researching how to use it to access my Gmail locally, I discovered a nice option in the Junk Email Options pane.
A large amount of the spam that I get consists of mail coming from all sorts of international domains. Since I don't have many close friends that live in other countries, I really don't need to see any email from most of those domains, at least not on my personal accounts.
To block all of that spam mail from hitting your inbox, open Windows Mail and go to the Tools \ Junk Mail Options item. Click the International tab, and you should see this screen:
There are two seperate ways that you can block international spam: First, you can block the domains themselves by selecting them here. If you do the Select All option, you should be warned that .US is also in that list.
You can also choose to block message encodings. I blocked all of the asian message encodings, because I definitely can't read those languages, and about 1/10th of the spam I get these days is encoded in one of those types. Again, be careful about doing the Select All option or you will end up blocking all email from everybody.

Minimalist Explorer Breadcrumbs for Windows XP

One of the more popular changes in Windows Vista is the Explorer Breadcrumbs feature that lets you easily navigate to folders below the current folder by using the drop-down arrows. We've already featured one alternative for Windows XP users, but we've come across a much better solution to share with you.
This explorer add-on is written to be as minimal as possible, and is much easier to install. Overall quite a nice solution for those stuck on Windows XP.
Installation
All you really have to do is download and install the utility. Close out all Windows Explorer windows, and then open up a new window, and you'll see the new toolbar over to the right.
Uncheck "Lock the Toolbars" if checked…
And then drag the toolbar down underneath the other toolbars. You can also hide the regular Address Bar toolbar if you'd like.
Usage
Since we are all running now, you can use the arrows to quickly navigate through the folders.
Or if you click in the address bar it will convert into a textbox address bar (which is why you don't need the original address bar)
You'll also notice that memory usage is extremely light, since it's a plugin for Explorer but written to be as minimal as possible.

Enable More Simultaneous Downloads in Internet Explorer

Have you ever tried to download more than 2 files from the same website and noticed the third download doesn't start until one of the prior two are done? The reason for this is that the HTTP 1.1 spec says that only two connections may be allowed at a time, so your browser adheres to that limit.
We can boost that number for IE by using a registry hack, but let me warn you not to go crazy and increase it too far.
If everybody increased the number of connections it would really put a hurting on the webservers out there, and then webmasters would have to start blocking extra threads.
Manual Registry Hack
Open regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
On the right hand side, you'll want to create two new 32-bit DWORD values:
MaxConnectionsPerServer - This sets the limit for HTTP 1.1 servers, which is normally supposed to be 2
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server - This sets the limit for HTTP 1.0 servers, which is normally supposed to be 4
You can change the amount of connections for either one by changing the value, but I wouldn't try and crank it up too far, as you'll find your browsing becomes much slower than normal, and possibly would get you blocked from some servers for using too many connections. A safe bet is to double the defaults.
Downloadable Registry Hack
This downloadable hack will only slightly increase the values, which is probably the wisest course of action. You could modify the script to use more if you'd like.
You can download, extract and double-click on the registry file in order to enter the information into the registry. To uninstall, use the uninstall script included in the zipfile.

What is dwm.exe And Why Is It Running?

Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) is the compositing window manager that gives you all those pretty effects in Windows Vista: Transparent windows, live taskbar thumbnails (that you can resize now), and even the Flip3D switcher that you can disable and replace with Switcher.
What happens in Vista is that applications write the picture of their window to a specific place in memory, and then Windows creates one "composite" view of all the windows on the screen before sending it to your monitor. Because Vista is keeping track of the contents of each window, it can add effects when layering the windows such as the transparency we're all used to, as well as the live preview thumbnails.
The benefit to using this approach is that Windows Vista can utilize the hardware acceleration features in your video card to create very smooth animations for minimizing and restoring, and even for the transparent effects.
What about Memory Usage?
If you open up Task Manager, you can see the dwm.exe process in the list, typically taking somewhere between 30-50MB of memory in my testing:
The size of the DWM process is controlled by the number of windows that you have open, since each window requires a buffer in memory to store the contents of the window. If you have a large number of very large windows open, DWM will use more memory.
The benefits of using a compositing window manager are worth that relatively small amount of memory under most circumstances.
Does Switching to the Vista Basic Theme Turn it Off?
The short answer is no, just switching to the Vista Basic theme will not turn off DWM, but it will reduce the memory usage a great deal.
How do you switch to Vista Basic? Just right-click on the desktop, choose Personalize, and then Window Color and Appearance:
Click on classic appearance properties at the bottom:
Then choose Windows Vista Basic and click the Apply button:
Note that I'm not recommending switching to the Basic theme, just explaining how to do it.
So How Do I Turn dwm.exe Off Then?
Note that I don't recommend turning this off unless you are playing games in fullscreen mode, and even then it likely won't help increase speed.
The only way to get rid of the dwm.exe process is to stop the service from running. Open up Services from Control Panel or the start menu, and then find the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" service in the list, and click the stop button. Note that you will be switched to the Vista Basic theme when you click the button.
To permanently disable it, double click on the item and select Disabled from the "Startup type" drop-down:
If you want to use the command line instead, you can open an administrator mode command prompt and use one of these commands:
Stop Service net stop uxsms
Start Service net start uxsms
Disable Service sc config uxsms start= disabled
Enable Service sc config uxsms start= auto

Save Internet Explorer Bookmarks

Personally the only time I use Internet Explorer anymore is if I am downloading Windows updates or a certain page doesn't pull up correctly with Firefox. Speaking of that … there is a great Firefox extension for just such a situation IE Tab.
For work though I find myself in situations where I need to set up IE for users. Today I had to pull out an old IE trick for a user who was switching to a different workstation. They wanted to take their bookmarks from IE with them. Here is how.
Open Internet Explorer and click on File \ Import and Export…
This will start up the Import/Export Wizard. Click Next.
Since we are saving the bookmarks from this machine choose Export Favorites ….you can also export cookies and RSS feeds if you want to. Click Next.
Your will see your Favorites folder highlighted. Click Next.
Now we want to choose a location to store the favorites. Here I chose a network drive. You can also save them to a flash drive or a floppy if the file is not too large. After you have selected a location to store the file click Next.
Once the Wizard has finished saving the files click OK. Then click the Finish button. That's all there is to it! Now when you go to the new machine just run the Import Export Wizard and choose "Import Favorites" then point to the saved location.

Print Pages in Internet Explorer 7 Without Headers or Footers

The headers and footers that always print along with the page when printing a page can be irritating. I know very well what page it was I printed, so it's not useful to me to show the URL at the bottom of the page.
If you want to turn the headers off just for a one-time print, you can use the Print Preview window, and then click the button to "Turn headers and footers on or off.
If you want to permanently turn these options off, you can use the Page Setup option instead.
Just click on Page Setup, and then you should see the dialog box.
You can just remove the text in the textboxes completely in order to get rid of the headers and footers, or you can change the options to display page numbers at the bottom, or really any combination you want.
Here's a full list of the options that you can use (You could also find these in the Vista help files, or possibly the IE7 ones)
&w - Window Title
&u - Page URL
&d - Date in short format
&D - Date in long format
&t - Time in regular format as shown on the clock
&T - Time in 24-hour format
&p - Current page number
&P - Total number of pages
&b - right align the next text. (You can see it in the default header, where &b is placed before the Page text)
&b[TEXT]&b - If you surround the text in &b on either side, it will center the text.
&& - A single ampersand (&)
You can combine these in any format you want. For instance you could do this:
I printed these &P pages on &d at &t
Which would give you something like this:
I printed these 10 pages on 02/09/2008 at 01:10 PM.

Disable That Irritating AutoScroll Feature in Firefox

So you try to middle click on a link on a page and miss the link… then the round "Auto Scroll" icon shows up and suddenly the page is moving around and scrolling all by itself. It drives me crazy, so when it was mentioned in the latest Coding Horror article I figured I would write it up in case anybody else wants to disable it.
Note: You can't disable the same thing in Internet Explorer as far as I know.
Open up the Options dialog through Tools \ Options, click on the Advanced tab/button, and then uncheck the "Use autoscrolling" box.
