Tweak IE9, Modify Internet Explorer 9 Settings

When you are trying to customize Microsoft’s latest web browser Internet Explorer 9 you are limited by the configuration options, called Internet Options in the browser. Those options have not really changed a lot since the release of Internet Explorer 6. Users who wanted to tweak and modify other elements of the browser had to rely on Registry tweaks, group policies and third party tools.

One of those third party tools has just been released in a new version. Tweak IE9 has been designed specifically for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 browser. The portable program checks if Internet Explorer 9 is installed on the system. If it is, it displays a start button that launches the program.

Internet Explorer 8 Most Common Browser, Trailed By Firefox, Chrome

Browser Support
While web sophisticates might sneer at it, Internet Explorer is the most commonly used browser in the world, according to Royal Pingdom.

In fact, the race isn't even that close. While Internet Explorer (all versions combined) takes 44 percent of share, Firefox follows with 28 percent, followed by Chrome at 20 percent, with Safari, Opera and others at the bottom. In terms of specific versions, Internet Explorer 8 is the most used, claiming a 28-percent share, compared to Firefox 4.0's 16 percent.

Still, Internet Explorer's lead is a fraction of what it once was. In 2004, before Firefox, IE had close to 95 percent of the market. As competing browsers like Firefox and Chrome has arisen, IE's star has sunk.

Safari, the default browser for Apple products, captured only 5 percent of overall share, but Royal Pingdom notes that Safari for iPad has already shot up to take 0.68 percent of the web, all in just over a year.

Google's Chrome, which is a little under three years old, has shown remarkable growth since its introduction. It currently trails Firefox, and research showns that as Chrome has grown, Firefox has shrunk.

MS Patch Tuesday: Gaping holes haunt Internet Explorer browser

There is plenty of work this month of June for IT administrators - Microsoft’s June Patch Tuesday addresses 34 vulnerabilities in 16 distinct bulletins. Nine of the bulletins carry a maximum severity of “critical”, while the remaining seven are rated as “Important” only.

Plus there are the critical fixes from Adobe Reader and Oracle for Java.

No doubt IT Administrators will have to pick and choose where to act first.

The highest priority Microsoft bulletins should be:

    * MS11-050, which addresses 11 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6,7, 8 and 9.
    * MS11-052, which patches VML, a markup language that is used mainly in Internet Explorer.

Browser and plug-in vulnerabilities together have been the point of entry for many recent security incidents and are the main infection vector for mass malware such as Zeus and SpyEye (for some interesting statistics see this recent StopBadWare report.

The combo MS11-050/052, together with APSB11-016 from Adobe and Java CPU June 2011 is the first highest priority set of vulnerabilities to address this week. That way IT admins will keep ahead of the “ExploitKit” writers and and make their workstation infrastructures more robust.

Second on the list should be MS11-045, which fixes eight vulnerabilities in all versions of Excel including for Mac OS X. Microsoft ranks it only as “Important” because the end user is required to open an attacker-provided file, but we believe that attackers have shown often enough that they have the skills to make opening the file enticing enough for end users, especially with a file format like Excel that is used overwhelmingly for serious, business related communication.

Other high priority bulletins are MS11-042 and MS11-043, which address critical flaws in the SMB and DFS clients on Windows. Strict outbound firewalling will help enterprises in both cases to keep the exposure low, but since the exploit index is a low “1″ for both vulnerabilities, IT admins should schedule them for inclusion into the patch process as soon as possible.

The only bulletin with a known exploit in the wild is MS11-046, a local privilege escalation flaw in the “afd.sys” driver. IT admins can check with their end-point security providers for coverage, but should include this bulletin high on their to-do lists in any case, as it is only a matter of time until we see more attackers use malware taking advantage of this exploit to gain control of your workstations.

Manage Your Internet Explorer

You may have notice that after you have downloaded some files or programs from the Internet, your homepage of the explorer will likely be changed. Many people resort to changing the settings of the Internet Options and some will ignore this. But most of them are not aware that the system has been secretly altered until the big errors occur. IE is the eye of the PC users to the outside world, which makes it the most possible one to be attacked by malicious programs. Because of this, you will probably encounter the malfunction of it and have to do something. You have to slow down your pace and take a look at the problems you may meet.

For IE 5, there will be problems caused by out-of-date files, incorrect or incomplete registration of files. You can use the explorer repair tool in the Control Panel. If the repair tool detects an error, it might correct it automatically; in this case, you need restart your computer to complete the repair process. For certain types of errors, if you have received the error message "Internet Explorer 5 cannot be repaired. Please reinstall it", or other errors, it means the above repairs do not help.

Internet Explorer 6.x is very tightly integrated into Windows, more so than other programs. Microsoft does not offer any way to repair it through the Add/Remove Programs control panel. To repair or reinstall the browser you need the Windows CD. Run "sfc /scan now" and you will be prompted to provide the Windows CD. You can complete it by following a few steps. There will be messages if the repair fails.

In this case, you can reinstall the explorer. But you have to edit the registry to make Windows allow a full reinstallation of it. It is really time-consuming and risky to do the registry editing. Any error in editing registry can potentially cause Windows unable to boot, requiring you to reinstall Windows. What can we do if the reinstallation fails due to that we can not do registry editing properly? Actually, we can be relaxed when our Internet Explorer doesn't work properly, because there are so many standby tools available in the market. They are designed for solve the situations that the Internet Explorer is not working smoothly. Internet Explorer always stays minimised, new windows can not be opened with Internet Explorer hyperlink, and so on.

Speed up Internet Explorer 6

Internet Explorer 6 has been around for a while and its been a good browser. Since new alternatives like Firefox and Opera have come out we now know that, yes there is faster browsing out there. Internet Explorer can be as fast after trying out a few tips in this article.

Step 1: Default is your friend.

You heard it here first folks. (probably not) Generally setting the browser to its defaults will make it go faster. There are two areas in specific that will make the largest impact. Security settings and the advanced settings. To set these at their defaults go to Internet Explorer. In the browser go to the tools menu and select internet options. In the internet options go to the security tab. In the security tab set all of the zones to default. Then go to the advanced tab. In the advanced tab you will find the restore defaults button at the bottom of the window. Click o it and that's it. Click on OK and restart your browser.

Step 2: Setting the Number of Connections per Session.

Internet explorer limits the number of connections it opens when you click on a link to open an new web page. Microsoft did this to comply with HTTP 1.1 standards but it also really slows down things when you open a new website and download the sites images. So to change that go to the start menu and select run. In the run command type regedit and click OK to open the registry editor. In the registry editor navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings. Here change the MaxConnectionsPerServer and MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server to a number you wish. That's it, once done restart windows and you are all set. Just a note that this will effect all windows applications that use the internet explorer api so if something else is not working right that is why.

Step 3: Keep less and save time.

Windows by default will automatically set your temporary internet files to a certain percentage of your hard drive. If you have a hard drive that is a 200 gigabytes your temporary internet files will be a couple of gigabytes in size. The more files that Internet Explorer has to look through the more time it takes to load a page. To change the size of your temporary internet files goto the tools menu in Internet Explorer and select internet options. In the internet options click on the settings buttons in the temporary internet files. Change the size to the desired amount (I usually use 100MB) and click on OK. Your computer might stall for a little bit if there are a lot of files to delete.

Its as easy as that. Three steps to speed up your internet browsing in Internet Explorer. I'm sure there is a whole lot more out there but these are the ones that will help you out the most. Till next time.
